The Power of Praise

Nov 19, 2013 at 14:51

Giving praise or acknowledgement is difficult for many people. Most of us have never received praise and recognition from our parents, teachers, etc, so have no constructive reference to work from.

A fun way to develop of Culture of Praise is to say something nice (honest) about the people we interact with each day.

Something will become clear very quickly, most people feel embarrassed receiving Praise and others simply can not accept it at all.

We only need to look at the dominant form of comedy or humour we use. People find it funny when someone is getting hurt or are being taken advantage of in someway. Humour that laughs at someone is less evolved than humour where we laugh with someone.

I remember a story I read about a secretary who when first coming to work at the new office struggled with all the praise she received from her boss. During an assessment her boss asked if he could do anything for her. She asked him to stop praising her as it made her feel uncomfortable. Two months later in her next review she asked her boss if he would start praising her again, she missed it.

There is and old saying that goes something like this ?Honey attracts better than vinegar? Most of us use subtle forms of abuse more easily than praise or encouragement. There are many excuses why we did this in the past, but none for why we continue to hurt and crush others, especially children.

Parents and teachers who display an attitude of praise always bring out the best in children. This builds confidence in those children and they in turn create a more stable and supportive community.

Many workers will take reduced wages and conditions to support the business if their boss had an attitude of praise. Business like a fish rots from the head. Management that instills a culture of praise from the top down will always outperform a cut throat greed orientated company.

When giving praise especially if it is a new experience it may feel uncomfortable especially if the receiver has trouble accepting your praise. In cases like this simply love feeling uncomfortable. It sometimes helps to explain that you are working to be more encouraging and supportive

A young girl was going out for a big night on the town with sex on her mind. Her father called her into her study and said ?Darling have a wonderful night and enjoy yourself. You are incredibly special to me and I love you dearly. Please don?t do something that is beneath who and what you really are?

She went out with a completely different attitude. What would have happened if dad had given ?the lecture??
